Come Closer

World Premiere

Join Opera 5 for the world premiere of Come Closer – a new Canadian opera by composer Ryan Trew and librettist Rachel Krehm based on Rachel’s experience of losing her sister Elizabeth to addiction. Full of nostalgia, joy, connection, and reflection, Come Closer follows Big Sister through a series of waking dreams sparked by the poetry of her late Little Sister. As Big Sister reads, she explores the past and her mind tries to make sense of who her sister was, their relationship from innocent childhood to a more fractured adolescence, what happened, and how to continue forward.

Elegies: A Song Cycle

Come celebrate our Portfolio Artist interns as they perform “Elegies: A Song Cycle” by William Finn. In this 75 minute musical revue, Finn pays tribute to his family members, friends and even pet dogs that have died, through touching stories that will make you laugh, cry, and hug your loved ones a little closer. Even without knowing these particular beings personally, the love and care that Finn imbues into his music helps us all to connect to our own grief stories. Community is vital when grieving and we invite you into ours as we take this musical journey together.
