MADDALENA OHRBACH
Maddalena Ohrbach (she/her) is an Italian-American multidisciplinary singer. She received her Bachelor’s in Voice from the Peabody Institute, studying with Ah Young Hong funded by the Rosa Ponselle Scholarship in Voice; there, she worked as a collaborative pianist, Technology Fellow and Inspired Aging Fellow, and premiered many works by living composers. She is interested in the intersection of contemporary music, social issues, dramaturgy, and disciplines like photography and poetry to explore under-represented narratives. With a dedication to community work, she interned with Boulanger Initiative and Institute of Composer Diversity, researching and advocating for marginalized composers, and funded by the Peabody Launch Grant, she offered a workshop series in singing and mindful breathing in a Baltimore women’s shelter. She also leads and sings in À Mer Quartet, a classically-trained and electro-acoustic-inclined ensemble that was recently in residency at Banff Centre to develop a project around Afghan women’s oral poetry tradition. A passionate chorister and frequent soloist, she has sung with McGill’s Schulich Singers, Harmonicham Choir, Peabody Singers and NEXT Chorus, Buffalo Choral Arts Society, NAfME All-Eastern, and she toured Europe with American Music Abroad’s Honor Choir. She currently pursues a Master’s in Opera at McGill University, studying with Dominique Labelle and Michael McMahon, where she recently appeared as Berthe in Weir’s Blond Eckbert and Maureen in Gray’s Tax Opera, and co-directed and sang in a student production of Sokolović’s Svadba. Outside of music, she works as a specialty barista, cooks vegetarian food with friends and their pets, and runs along the Lachine Canal.
