EMMA YEE

Heralded by Opera Canada for her “strong, clear, and confident” sound, Tkaronto-born mezzo-soprano Emma Yee (she/her) is an active interdisciplinary musical artist. Emma is in the first year of her Master’s in Opera and Voice Performance program at McGill in Tiohtià:ke (Montréal, QC), studying with Dr. Tracy Smith Bessette. Previously, she studied at Mount Allison University in Mi’kma’ki (Sackville, NB) with Dr. Vicki St. Pierre. Recent performance highlights include alto soloist in Messiah (Christ Church Cathedral Montréal), Mère Jeanne in Dialogues des Carmélites (Opera McGill), and Serse in Serse (Halifax Summer Opera Festival). When Emma is not on stage, she can often be seen behind the scenes, with recent technical theatre credits including stage managing Dialogues des Carmélites (Opera McGill), An Inspector Calls (Motyer-Fancy Theatre), and PRÉCIPICE (Tintamarre), as well as serving as the Motyer-Fancy Theatre’s Web and Marketing Technician for two years. Emma is informed by her role as a performer-scholar, with a publication in Nota bene titled “Liberatory Praxis in Operatic Rehearsal Processes,” and research related to music and colonialism, music and politics, and power structures in opera. In her work with the Sackville Undergraduate Music Research Lab, she worked on the creation of materials for the New Brunswick music curriculum related to topics of music and war, and the creation of a database of sources for the SSHRC project Changing Colonial Narratives in Eurocentric Music History (IDG 2021). Emma is extremely excited to take part in Opera 5’s Portfolio Artist Internship this summer!
